The buildings in French section of Pondicherry are an enduring legacy of French history in India. The French Heritage walk will take you through streets that are laid out in a well planned grid pattern. The buildings in the Tamil streets are characterized by rows of tiled roofed buildings almost joined together by continuous wall to wall constructions. A synthesis of these two styles has resulted in a town that has a unique 'Franco Tamil' architectural identity.

Andaman / Nicobar Islands Honeymoon Tour

Highlights : Off the eastern coast of India in the Bay of Bengal, lies an archipelago very close to the Myanmar's coastline, yet a part of India. Almost untouched by the modern world, some of the islands are inhabited by the original tribes. Of the total of 572 islands, islets and rocks, only 38 are inhabited. Though a famous tourist destination now, it has a very dark history very closely associated with the British Raj.

In Port Blair, the capital city, lies the ruins of the cellular jail, where the freedom fighters were tortured and kept in solitary confinement. A punishment worse than death (it is said that no prisoner sent there ever returned to the mainland), it was known as Kala Pani (Black water) and it was spoken of with fear and awe. It is now a memorial in honor of those who were imprisoned there and those who perished.

TOURIST SPOTS in and around Port Blair

Chatham Saw Mill
During the British rule, one of Asia's largest saw mills was built here. This is a government owned mill where more than 1000 employees work. They permit tourists to see the process of felling and cutting and curing wood, without any charges.

Forest Dept. Museum
The museum is a storehouse of the kinds of trees available in Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Samples of various kinds of trees and their names are exhibited here. Wooden handicrafts are kept on display and are available for a price.

Samudrika
Corals, shells, fish, sea creatures are all found here. Also the Navy's costumes, equipments and weapons are displayed. Some islands documentaries are also available here.

Sound & Light Show
At 6.00 pm in the Cellular Jail there is a commentary in Hindi and at 7.15 pm in English.

Ross Island
This island was the capital city of the British rule. Ruins of British building such as church, pool, government offices, market place and Jymkana club are still present here. 'Smrithka' - a museum, is maintained by the Naval force.. Photostat copies of letters written by British officials, photographs and detailed documentary about the island are found in the museum. Due to earthquakes, parts of the island are sinking. It is feared that in due course the island would be completely eroded by the sea. Peacocks and deer abound this place. The island has a graveyard of the British nationals who were buried during their stay in these islands.

Viper Island
The Viper Island was used by the British to imprison convicts before the cellular jail was constructed. Remains of the old jail and the gallows built by the British in 1867 are still visible on top of a hillock, which offers breathtaking views of the sea and other islands. The island got its name from a British ship by the same name that was wrecked nearby.

Mount Harriet
This is a big mountain about 55 kms from Port Blair. During the British regime, the governor spent his summer vacation on this mountain. The whole government functioned from here. It is raised about 365 m from sea level. An ideal spot to enjoy scenic beauty. Verdant forests, quiet solitude, blue skies, pristine sea coast are the rarities of this spot. It is a sanctuary for people who seek private time. It is a creator's paradise. The mountain has a government tourist home too.

This belongs to the Central Government. This research centre is involved in cultivating experimental crops, vegetables, essences and perfumes. It is on a stretch of about 80 acres and is about 14 k.m away from Port Blair. Sea creatures & fish are also researched here.

Wandoor Beach & Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park
This is a beautiful beach located 29 kms away from Port Blair. About 15 islands surround this coastline, Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park has been constructed on these islands stretching about 281.50 sq. km. One can enjoy coral reefs, deep sea animals and mangrove forests here. A stretch of pristine coastline adds to the beauty. A small port charters boats to Jolly buoy Island and Red Skin Island.

Jolly Buoy Island
These islands are part of the Mahatma Gandhi Park. Clean sands and swimming pools are their speciality. The water is so transparent that one can clearly view the coral reefs under them. Lots of fish with variegated colors swim across in shoals in a friendly manner. One can also observe the life style of deep sea creatures. An ideal resort for tourists to unwind and enjoy. The place is filled with peace and serenity. It is about a half-day trip. One needs to take food and water along. One has to travel about from Port Blair by road to Wandoor. Mangrove Canopy Walk

A unique facility for tourists has come up with the 240 meters long Mangrove canopy walk at Baratang Island. The canopy walk is a long wooden structure raised to the height of one to two meters and passes through thick mangrove forests on each side. Display boards are also placed along the walkway which serves as an open mangrove interpretation centre. These boards provide detailed information about mangrove forests and its importance in the protection and conservation of the coastal areas.

Creek Safari
One can take a cruise along the creeks of Baratang and enjoy the breathtaking scenery, the mangroves, do some interesting bird-watching and sight some wildlife if lucky enough.

Bird Tours
The habitat preferences of 30 species of forest birds were studied in Baratang Island in the Andaman's, India. The relationship between habitat preferences and large-scale patterns, such as biogeographical distribution of each species on the continent of Asia and distributional status within the Andaman Islands was analyzed. The birds fell into five categories, those found predominantly in only one habitat type, evergreen or deciduous forest, and those which used a broader range of habitats, which were classified on the basis of their relative occurrence in each habitat type as semi-evergreen, moist deciduous or generalist species. The habitat preferences of these 30 species showed no association with either the biogeographical distribution or with status, suggesting that large-scale distributional patterns are not related to habitat preferences.

Bird watching is a family sport, which you can enjoy with your whole family and introduce the small children also about the surprise that nature has in stored. Bird Watching can easily be called a community activity, a social activity. Still, if you like to explore nature alone then so be it. Its a pleasure in going out alone for bird watching too, it brings out a feeling of solitude. Even if bird watching is a new activity on the Indian adventure sports circuit still the popularity rate of this activity is catching up with the sports enthusiast of almost every age group.
