Indian railway tickets much simpler than ever before. Throughout the country, there are numerous counters where one can easily book the tickets. The metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai and Delhi, have many counters at different centers for the convenience of users for booking rail tickets. Most of the manual reservation centers have been changed into computerized reservation centers, which provide ticket booking facilities from any station to any destination in quick time. These reservation centers work between 08:00 hrs IST to 20:00 hrs IST, apart from Sundays. On Sundays, they operate till 14:00 hrs IST. Most of the routes are of the Indian Railways are much in demand and remain crowded most of the times. Due to this, people are recommended to get their bookings done in advance. Indian Railways has provided the facility of advanced reservation, which is made open 60 days before the actual date of journey. Advance Reservation is also made for people, who want to set out on sight-seeing trip or pilgrimage trips. The confirmed reservations guarantee that one is formally allowed to enter and travel by the train in the allotted seat numbers. In a single ticket, reservations are permitted for a maximum of 6 passengers with a condition that all of them are heading for the same destination. Some authorized travel agencies are allowable to issue tickets. From 2001, Senior citizens have got the authorization to get 30% reduction on their reserved tickets.
Advent of computerization system has also made it possible for passengers to book their ticket online. This system has also allowed checking whether the waitlisted ticket is confirmed or not. One can also check whether the fares have been changed or not and can look for the latest train timings. Apart from the ordinary reservation, 'Tatkal' is an emergency reservation scheme that is discussed in another article. IR also allows break journeys provided it is not in excess of eight journeys and completed within the validity period.

Indian Railway Thinks
Once the tracks are out of city limits it is very much possible, but once the tracks approach within city or town limits it will become very difficult to lay tracks due to space crunch especially in a densly populated city like Mumbai.
In order to circumvent this problem, when the tracks approach the cities or major towns they should be split into seperate corridors and the stations can be positioned in such a way that they lie in and about the boundary of the city.
So for example say there are 5 twin line corridors, people will have a choice of selecting either one of the five corridors depending on where they live in that city.
For a very small town or village, it wont make snese to pass 5 twin line corridors through them, instead 5 villages and towns should be selectd lying within say 20-25 kilometers of each other and the five corridors should pass individially through these towns/villages with seperate stations.
However, this may seem too good to be true, since it involves factors like Planning, Research, Feasability Study, Cost, Time, Political Will & last but not the least Govt. red tape.
Just to give you an example of what I mean...the KONKAN RAILWAY could have very well been a twin line corrridor (1up, 1dn) but it was laid down as a single line route...and i really dont know why...

Student Concession from Indian Railway?
I am a student of Indraprastha University (IPU), Delhi, studying in JIMS. My friends and I are planning a trip to Goa. How can we get the 50% student concession offered by the Indian Railways.
Well every college has a application form for filling for students concession. It has to be submitted along with the booking slip. But i want to warn you that you only get students concession in 2nd class trains in only Sleeper Class. !st class trains are like Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, Garib Rath, or any other special trains.
You have to get the concession form duly completed and signed by the College, get the same attested by the nearest railway station of your place and submit the same to the Railway Booking counter while booking the ticket. You can also get student concession from Indian Airlines by producing the concessional form issued by the college.
